Hot on the heels of his visit to the ITB Tourism fair in Berlin, where he said there was a lot of interest from German investment Funds, Medina has appeared on Spanish TV to talk about what is now looking like a substantial development with and estimated cost of over €1bn. Much of which is already commited.

According to Torrox major Oscar Medina, the development, which he said will be like Sotogrande and La Zagaleta, will consist of a golf course, a marina, 6000 homes (of which 1000 will be "affordable") and a new hospital.

Medina went on to say that the German market will play a big part in the development of the Calaceite region of Torrox, with much of funding coming from Germany, plus the large German population in Torrox (the largest in Spain) as potential customers.

Based on the current projections it's expected that the whole project will be defined with two years, with construction commencing shortly afterwards.

When asked about lack of water in the region and how the present water supply can cope with such a large influx of residents and tourists, Medina said that while the recent rainfall is welcomed, particularly for the local farmers, the plan for a local desalinsation plant must push ahead at speed.Following a successful appearance at the ITB Tourism fair in Berlin, Torrox Mayor Oscar Medina has updated plans for what is now a major development in the Calaceite region, estimated to exceed €1 billion in investment. The project, likened to the prestigious Sotogrande and La Zagaleta, the project has already secured substantial financial commitments, notably from German investment funds.

The proposed development encompasses:

  • A golf course
  • A modern marina Approximately 6,000 residential units, including 1,000 designated as "affordable housing" A new, state-of-the-art hospital Mayor Medina emphasized the pivotal role of the German market in this venture. He highlighted the significant German population residing in Torrox, the largest in Spain, as both potential investors and residents. Furthermore, substantial funding is anticipated from German sources.

The project is currently in its planning phase, with a two-year timeline for finalizing development details. Construction is expected to commence shortly thereafter.

Addressing concerns regarding water resources, Mayor Medina acknowledged the recent rainfall as beneficial, particularly for local agriculture. However, he stressed the urgent need for a local desalination plant to ensure a sustainable water supply for the increased population and tourism activity. This initiative is considered crucial to support the region's long-term growth.

This ambitious development promises to transform the Calaceite region of Torrox, bringing significant economic and infrastructural advancements.
